Gasing

Malaysia / Melaka — Wooden Top

Gasing is the traditional spinning top of Malaysia, deeply rooted in village life, especially in Kelantan and Melaka. Dating back to the 15th-century Melakan Sultanate, it was often played after the rice harvest—a time of rest, gathering, and friendly competition.

The name itself reflects motion and strength, evoking the idea of a powerful, continuous spin. Some even trace its origin to the berembang tree, whose fruit resembles a natural top—an early inspiration for Malay craftsmen.

Over time, gasing evolved into a rich tradition with more than 100 variations. Each shape carries meaning: some inspired by everyday life, others by proverbs or the sea, reflecting the culture and environment of the Malay world.

Today, gasing is still very much alive. Competitions, festivals, and modern materials keep the practice evolving, while preserving what matters most—the connection between skill, craftsmanship, and the simple joy of a spinning top.
